Film Reviews from MarkMeets

Film has been part of MarkMeets since its beginnings in 2002. Our writers, reporters and contributors cover cinema through reviews, interviews, screenings and events, with founder Mark Boardman also contributing his experience as an entertainment journalist and film reviewer.

Our coverage spans different genres and styles, from major studio releases to independent films. A useful review explains what works, what does not and why, giving readers more to consider than a rating alone.

What Makes a Useful Movie Review?

A film can succeed in different ways. A comedy needs to make its audience laugh; a thriller needs to sustain tension; a documentary needs to handle its subject thoughtfully. Reviews are most useful when they consider what a film is trying to achieve.

Our wider review coverage considers elements such as:

  • Story and screenplay: the characters, dialogue, structure and ideas.
  • Performances: how the cast brings the material to life.
  • Direction: the choices shaping the film’s tone and storytelling.
  • Visuals and sound: cinematography, editing, production design, music and effects.
  • Pacing: whether the film holds attention and gives its important moments room.
  • Overall experience: what stays with the viewer after the credits.

Different critics can reach different conclusions about the same film. Reading the reasoning behind a verdict helps you decide whether its strengths and weaknesses matter to your own tastes.

Ratings, Recommendations and Your Own Taste

A rating offers a quick summary, but the review provides the context. A film with a mixed reception may still be exactly what you enjoy, while an acclaimed release may not suit the evening you have in mind.

Look at the genre, subject, tone and points raised by the reviewer. Partner publications may use their own rating systems, so their scores should be read in that context.

More Than Movie Reviews

MarkMeets follows films beyond the review itself. Our coverage includes announcements, trailers, interviews, cinema releases, DVD and home-entertainment reviews, and selected competitions.
